What I Do

The primary goal of Kiyoko's Place is to help students thrive. As a reading and writing interventionist, I conduct both individual and group sessions for students facing various literacy challenges. Specifically, I provide key information and guided instruction, creating lessons that help students enhance their reading and writing skills. Additionally, students receive support with comprehension, reading strategies, vocabulary acquisition, and both formal and informal writing for academic and personal purposes. While learning literacy is essential, I also prioritize students' mental, physical, and emotional well-being, as well as confidence building and self-improvement. Therefore, my curriculum aims to instill positivity, self-awareness, and promote individual growth.

My Story

Everyone has a story about what inspired them to become a teacher, right? Well, initially, it was not my lifelong goal or dream career. I wanted to be a lawyer, a choreographer, and a famous writer—yes, all three! However, throughout different phases of my life, I became a professional hairstylist, a case manager for at-risk youth, and a preschool worker. At one point, I even opened my own in-home childcare center. One thing I quickly realized was that I enjoyed working with kids. They drove me crazy at times, but they also brought me immense joy. After working as a case manager for troubled teens, I discovered my genuine passion and concern for the overall well-being of struggling youth. This realization prompted me to shift my focus and combine both of my loves. I returned to school and earned my Bachelor's degree in Secondary English Education as well as my certification in Special Education for grades K-12. And guess what? I loved it! I’ve taught all grade levels, and during the summers, I am an instructor at a university. While I must admit that teaching can be a challenging profession, it is also a place where I learn just as much as I teach, where I have fun, and where I've forged lasting connections with both students and parents. That’s why I refer to my students as my school sons and daughters. When they need extra attention and guidance in different areas of learning and life, I wholeheartedly provide it. Kiyoko’s Place is my online education center and an extension of what I do in the classroom. Here, learning is more than just acquiring valuable information; it’s an experience. I welcome you to join me!
